Potty Training Breakthrough
On Monday, Elise uttered the words "poo-poo" and when Dad checked her diaper nothing was there. He asked if she wanted the potty and she said yes. Once on the potty, she poo'd and wouldn't get off until she was finished.
It started in late January when we happen to be at a toy store and saw the Bjorn potty seat and thought we should start thinking about training Elise. It sat in our closet for about two weeks before we finally dragged it out. Potty training only really came to top of mind after visiting preschools that require kids to be trained before enrollment. So, for about 4 weeks we put her on the potty after dinner (but before her bath) whenever we had the time or inclination. No real consistency (no one told us this part) because potty training is extremely time consuming! One of us would sit on a stool next to Elise while she sat on the potty, read and sing to her, entertain her with squares of toilet paper or whatever happened to be nearby. Most of the time she peed or pooped only because we knew her bowel schedule and timed it so. But this time she initiated the potty and took complete control of the process right down to telling Dad when she was finished.
The funny thing about this whole experience is that we have been taking a totally passive, uncommitted viewpoint to this whole potty training thing. In fact, we were dreading having her potty trained because of the convenience of changing her when it was convenient for us. Having her potty trained just seemed to stir up images of filthy public restrooms and emergency "pull over car rides" so she could go. If it were up to us, we'd probably have her in diapers way into her early tweens. Well, alas, the inevitable is nearing and it is unclear if this was just a one-time fluke or on to something more permanent.

Yeah for Elise's potty training efforts!
Oh I remember how you used to check out the restaurant bathrooms while we were in college! Don't worry, you can buy one of those potty seats that you can fit into the public toilet holes. The question is, how will you clean that once you pull the ring out?
