Happy 1st Birthday Elise

One year ago, our lives took a 180-degree turn on a road travelled by many but unique to us. It is a severe understatement to say that Elise changed our world. Unbeknownst to her, she became a world that revolved 24/7 around her, at least for the first 3 months. The next 9 months saw the scale tipping towards a more equitable balance, like 19/7 (we have to sleep people!). It was certainly a year of change and we saw ourselves morphing into people we never knew we would be. For example,
1) Getting out of bed at 6 am everyday
2)
Eating food that has fallen out of someone else's mouth (sometimes it's because we're hungry and forgot to feed ourselves or we're too lazy/tired to clean up the mess)
3) Sucking milk out of a sippy cup to see if the darn thing really works
4) Not watching TV when "you know who" is around
5) Ditching parties just to stay at home so Elise can get her sleep
6) Getting freakishly excited when she had a bowel movement during her constipation spell
7) Spending more on her clothes than both of us combined
8) Letting every room in the house be her own personal play-yard
9) Striking up random conversation with strangers as an excuse to talk about Elise
10) Forgoing sleep so this blog can be written

On Sunday, January 15, 143 family and friends celebrated her birthday in style. We had cotton candy, a clown, jumper, lots a balloons, and cupcakes. It meant alot to us to have so many people share this big milestone with us. It was certainly a happy occasion but tinted with some sadness that she was growing up so fast. People tell us that every stage is wonderful and so far we have found that to be true. But already she is staking her independence and finding that the piece of lint on the carpet is far more interesting than cuddling with Mom. She is a constant jabber and soon her first words will come spilling out. She knows the sign for milk, more, eat, and all done. And when you ask "where's the duck?" in Vietnamese, she can pick out the ducky picture every single time, even if you shuffle the cards. If the mood strikes her, she'll even give you a kiss. With her chubby index finger extended, she points to objects and people that interest her. And when she drops something, she says "uh-oh".

Our little Elise isn't so little anymore and it is sometimes a hard pill to swallow.
